The Sri Lankan gem and jewellery industry is steeped in history, with its roots tracing back to ancient times. Our nation has long been celebrated for its exquisite gemstones, such as sapphires and many other colored stones, which are highly prized globally. This rich heritage continues to shape our industry, driving both innovation and a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship.

Employment in this sector is a cornerstone of our economy, providing livelihoods to approximately 650,000 individuals across various roles, from miners to sales personnel. With around 900 exporters and 3,000 registered gem traders, the industry not only fuels economic growth but also showcases the skill and dedication of our people. The government's policy initiatives should be aimed at enhancing value addition, modernizing the industry, and providing concessions to comfort the industry. These are pivotal in maintaining our competitive edge.

Looking ahead, the development of the Rathnapura International Gem Industry City is a promising venture that will further elevate our global standing. Despite challenges like the recent pandemic and economic downturn, the resilience of Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector is truly commendable.
